How to See Margarita
by: Jan Walker

What do you want to see? You can get a customized tour of the island with a couple of the nicest young people you ever hope to meet. They have a well-kept SUV, with air conditioning, and they are excellent drivers. If you want to make a big hit with the drivers, bring them some Dr. Pepper. Can’t buy it on Margarita.

You couldn’t spend a more pleasant time than riding around the island with this couple. They want to take you to see what you are interested in. If you are interested in plants or pottery, then they will take you to the local nurseries and pottery shops.

If you are a history buff and want to see old churches, forts and castles, they have lots of those they can take you to visit. If you like to go shopping, they know just where to take you. If you want to go to the beaches or drive up on the mountain and view the island, then hop in. If you are flying into the airport, they will be there waiting to give you a safe ride to your hotel and can come back another day if you want a tour. Or, if you are on a cruise, they will meet you at the port and take you on a tour.

There is a lot of diversity on the island. Macanao on the one end is a refuge for many endangered species of birds and critters. They have a Marine museum with among other things, some gorgeous brain coral. At La Restinga, you can take a tour of the area in a boat and see live seahorses and other things courtesy of the boatman. There are numerous beaches with varied attractions.

Playa el Yaque is very popular with wind surfers. It is not real deep yet has a strong breeze that keeps you cool. It does not have rough waves. Playa el Agua is popular with tourists and has some riptides so be careful in the water. The beach is long and great for walking. There are lots of restaurants and several volleyball nets for public use. The Hilton has a nice beach and a wonderful swimming pool with canals that wind through gorgeous tropical foliage. There is a large casino there also.

Lagunamar Resort has a host of swimming pools and restaurants among other things. There is a four story water slide and a trolley to cart you around the grounds. They also have a nice casino. I spent a luxurious week at Lagunamar and would go back in a heartbeat.

There is something on Margarita for everyone. Even if you just like to complain, you can find something to complain about. So come on and enjoy yourself. It’s a fun place to be.
