Flying to Margarita
by: Nell Walling

One of the local airlines is Aeropostal. However, lots of other airlines fly to Caracas. Right now, there is renovation being done at the airport on Margarita. When it is finished, I am told that there will be direct flights to Margarita from the US.

At present, if you wish to fly to Margarita, you have to fly to Caracas or Valencia on the mainland and then fly on a smaller plane from there to Margarita. When you arrive in Caracas, you will have to exit at the front of the terminal and turn left and go to the next building to get your flight to Margarita.

When you leave Margarita, there is an airport tax that varies; it is around ten thousand bs. When you leave Caracas for the US, the airport tax is over 100.000 bs. This is not included in your ticket no matter what your travel agent may tell you so keep some cash on hand. Some flights allow two suitcases weighing seventy pounds each to Caracas but then the connecting flight to Margarita may only allow fifty pounds each for two suitcases.

Beware of the porters at the Caracas airport. They might try to charge you twenty-five dollars or more to carry your bags. That is too much. Unfortunately, some of these guys will hassle you for all you are worth. Hey, it happens in the US too.

You just have to keep your guard up and be firm. If there is a policeman around, ask him what the charge is. It was five dollars when I came. I don’t think it is much more if any now. When you land in Margarita, you might have to hang onto your hat or skirt. It can get windy.

The Margarita airport is not in town. It is 23 miles or 38 KM to Porlamar from the airport. Porlamar is the largest town on the island. It has some nice malls, grocery stores, hotels, most anything you could want. There are a few things you will not find in the grocery stores.

Once in a blue moon they are there but if you blink, you will miss them.

These are, cottage cheese, blueberries, cherry pie filling, cool whip, Lucky Charms cereal, root beer, Dr. Pepper, vanilla wafers, nutter butter cookies, fig newtons and shredded wheat. They do have lots of pepsi, coke, 7 up, strawberry newtons, blackberry newtons, guava newtons, corn flakes, wieners, bread, cheese, lunch meat, beef, chicken, McDonalds, Wendy's, Subway, empanadas, hot dogs, potato chips, Doritos, Pringles, bread, butter, margarine, coffee, tea, sugar, flour, powdered milk, oats, beans, rice, popcorn, candy, cookies, crackers, canned tuna, sardines, pasta, various dry cereals, baby food, fish, seafood, tomato sauce, canned vegetables, canned fruits, fresh vegetables and fruits, fresh and canned juices, ( no fresh peas), fresh coconut, toilet paper, laundry soap, fabric softener, bleach, cleaners, paper plates, plastic ware, napkins, Kleenex, pharmacies (farmacia), trash bags, shampoos, conditioners, soap, suntan lotion, makeup, jewelry, clothing, shoes, cars, appliances large and small, houses, condos, swimming pool supplies, restaurants, water park, amusement park, and about anything else you might want. Most hotels have a small sundries store.
