| Well,
you can call me a chicken if you want, but I grew up in Alaska. Sure, we had a
whole lot of shakin' goin' on up there but we didn't have tornados, hurricanes
or electrical storms around Anchorage where I grew up. We also didn't have snakes,
three cheers!!! I never wanted to go to a Caribbean island. I had no desire to
go on a cruise. So what did I do? I got married, left Alaska, and eventually,
we went on a cruise with my brother and visited Venezuela amidst all the Caribbean
island stops. Okay,so
now I live on Isla de Margarita, Venezuela, Pearl of the Caribbean, and it has
been a happy five plus years. If you cannot stand the heat I don't recommend it.
If you aren't sure, plan a trip and visit Margarita. Find out all of the facts
up front so you don't move here and then regret it. When
I first came to Margarita, I was suprised how many Walt Disney products were everywhere
in the stores. Toys, towels, you name it, you could buy it with a picture of Mickey
Mouse, Pluto, Taz, Tweety, ect. A lot of buses have wash cloths with Disney pictures
on them sewed together and hung across the top of the front window. It is very
colorful. I don't
own a car. There is a very good public bus system here and it is very cheap. I
pay under fifty cents to ride the bus into town. The inner-city bus system charges
about twenty-five cents to ride from place to place. There
are lots of taxis waiting for your beck and call. I ride the bus to the grocery
store and then take a taxi home for about three dollars and fifty cents. There
are ferry's that can take you from Margarita to the Mainland if you wish to go
there. Its costs 37.000 bolivars round trip on the slow ferry to Puerto La Cruz
and the exchange rate is 2,150 bs to the U.S. dollars. There is also a ferry which
goes from Margarita that will bring you to a point more closer to Caracas but
it is more expensive. I
love Margarita. It is surrounded by beaches (of course, it is an Island) and has
a cooling breeze most of the days. We have very few rainy days here. In the center
of the island are some nice mountains. There is a vast assortment of flowers that
grow here. The people are friendly. If you don't know allot of Spanish, the point
and grunt systems works pretty good. Also there are allot of people here who speak
English. If you
don't want to fly down here to the nice airport we have here, you can always book
a cruise to El Guamache and take a tour for a firsthand view of what we enjoy
year round. Maybe I will see you soon! Janelle
